Django Ready For a New Family

Hi Denise and Lisa,

This is to update you on how Diego is doing.

We've given him a new name: Django, which he is already responding to.  He has settled in very well.

He let us know that he likes his crate as a bed, but he does not like to be confined in it when we are out.  We've been leaving him loose in the house with the radio as a babysitter when we are away, and he has been perfect: no chewing, no barking or tearing around.  He spends a lot of time looking out the front door, which has a window low enough for him to see out of, and seems to think his job is keeping an eye on things outside.  He barks at appropriate things, but so far he stops quickly and doesn't carry on (what we had been worried about as we were looking for a dog to adopt).

He is funny in his reaction to men, as you told us.  He is easily frightened, and more likely if the guy is wearing a big winter coat.  But he's met a few men he likes, and we are learning what to tell people to do, to avoid scaring him.

He's doing well with the cat.  She's been more brave than we expected, and is doing her job of keeping him in his place.  Once in a while he'll look like he's going to chase her, but he stops if we interrupt him.  And he's ignored plenty of opportunities to chase her too.  He's so enthusiastic, that seems to be the only 'problem': he's a little too much for the small dogs, and some quieter big dogs, but he is doing very well with most dogs he meets.

He's great with some commands, very polite about putting on the leash, and sitting for his dinner.  We have a short list of things to work on with a trainer (pulling on walks) but he is very responsive and seems to really care about what we want him to do and not do.  He seems very trainable.

We've spent a lot of time brushing him, and just curling up on the floor with him, which he just loves.  He is very happy just sitting and having someone talk to him and pet him.

He also just loves tug of war, and running around like crazy in the park in the morning and evening.  It's funny how quiet he is indoors, when he gets so bouncy and excited in the park.

And his appetite's been great, after the first day when he took a little longer to eat, he's been finishing off his meals very quickly.

So things are going very well.  We think the way you took care of him after the shelter made a big difference.  He was really ready to settle in to a family.

Thanks so much!  We'll send you some pictures soon (as soon as he holds still for a good one!)

Darcy Moves to the Big Apple!

Hi Paige!

So far, everything has been great :)  The vet appointment went very well: we got her a vaccine for city dogs and the only problem seemed to be a bit of tartar (which will be fixed with Greenies and toothbrushing).  We got her microchip all straightened out!

I attached some fun photos of Darcy living it up in the city :)

Thanks so much!!

Jake Adores His New Family!

Hello Janet,

Happy New Year.  I just wanted to touch base since it has been a while to let you know that Jake is doing great! He is the love of the family and seems to be totally settled in and happy.  He has been healthy and of course active.  He seems to enjoy the cold weather and constantly wants to be outside.  The boys adore him and love that he is playful. I'm sending you the picture that we sent out for our Christmas card.  Hope all is well with you and the dogs you care for.

Rocky Moves to the Big Apple!

Hi Denise,

I hope that you are doing well.  It occurred to me that you might be
interested in an update on Rocky.

We moved to New York City and he transitioned well.  Jeff takes him to work and so he is walking at least 4 miles a day.  Everyone at work loves him!  We took
him to the vet recently for a checkup - and he is completely healthy.
He now weighs 45 pounds which the doctor said is ideal for him.  And,
he is very protective of Benny...they are both very attached to one
another.

On New Years, we visited a friend who has a house on 17 acres with a
very large section cleared and fenced off (about 8 acres).  Rocky was
in heaven!  I have attached a photo from that day.

So, thank you for bringing him to us.

Sweet, Lovable, Playful Mugsy

Denise and Paige,
Wanted to give you an update on sweet, lovable, playful Mugsy. He's just a terrific dog and we're enjoying him so much. He's definitely shy around other dogs and not much into investigating ones he comes across on walks, but that's not a bad thing. With people he's incredibly friendly....once he knows you're not an enemy, in no more than 30 seconds he's on his back looking for a belly rub. He's also a very good and loud watchdog. We're well aware when anyone (human and canine) is walking outside our fence! We couldn't be happier with him. Hope you're both doing well. I continue to check the website periodically and Shelter Survivors seems to be doing a great job placing dogs....best wishes for continued success in that regard. Here are a few pic's. We'll keep in touch for sure!
Abby & George
P.S. In the picture 2017, you'll see the little dirt bed he made for himself....it's the only digging he's done and on the hot summer days, he tended to lay in it since it was out of the sun and the dirt was cool....we thought it was very enterprising of him!

Jackie is SuperDog!

Paige;

Haven’t updated you in some time so I thought I better let you know she is doing very well and is just a super dog.   I visited one of my daughters in PA a while back who has a golden retriever and two cats.  Jackie has met the Golden before but not the cats and this time she did and pretty much ignored them.

Still having somewhat of a problem with separation as she is almost attached to me and when I leave the house without her she drives my wife up the wall as she howls and lays by the door until I return.  I try to take a number of trips without her but it hasn’t resolved it yet.

Hope all is well with you and are finding dogs as great as Jackie.

Cassie Provides Her Family With Lots of Laughs!

Hi Shawna,

Linda and I really admire you for being a foster doggie mom.  I'm afraid if we tried doing that we'd have a dozen dogs living with us!

Getting Cassie into her harness, which is a sort of web fabric one, is a total hoot!  She goes into wiggle-worm mode the minute that she sees it and it takes at least 5 minutes to get her into her harness.  It's hard to keep from laughing yourself silly when you're trying to get her into her harness.

Leaves and Cassie are a hilarious combination.  She jumps to catch them in her little mouth and seems so proud of herself when she does.  No bugs lately, but she is very adept at getting an acorn into her little mouth to bring in the house to chew up all over the carpet in the family room.  You have to love the little girl.  Right now she's in cat mode, for want of something better to call it.  Sleeping on the back of the love seat.

I'm so glad we just happened to go to PetCo the day you and she were there.  It's great having the little girl as a permanent member of our family -- it was definitely love at first sight!

Curtis - The Class Clown

Hi Paige,

Our boy Curtis is doing wonderfully. He has gone to 4 different pup classes and I started him on a agility but had to stop. Everyone in the classes loved him and he loved them. He was the class clown always rolling on his back after we worked on training.  I take him hiking 3 to 4 days a week and he makes sure that he has a eye on his mom all the times. The only time he doesn't listen to me is when he smells poop of any kind he goes and eats it! He loves to jump on laps for hugs and kisses. We have a friend that lives near us that we met at one of the classes that we visit and they play for hrs. I haven't had him weighed in a few wks but at 8 months he was 82 lbs. I've had a lot of people tell me he is a very handsome dog. I will keep you up dated on him.

Rocky and Benny Find A Home Together!

Hi,

I wanted to let you know that both dogs are doing so well and did not seem to experience much of a break-in period at all. Benny exhibits so many characteristics of our pom that we think there may be a little reincarnation at work. And Rocky immediately took to Jeff and has been by his side, especially last night. Thank you so much for allowing us the privilege to adopt them!

The first picture was taken in the early afternoon on Saturday.  The one with Rocky sprawled out on the bed was taken after we returned from the dog park. The remaining two were taken this morning.  Benny and Rocky are  a joy to have in our home.  Thank you so much for making them so comfortable with people and new environments - you really did an amazing job.

And Beamer Makes Three!!

Hello Friends and Family alike!

While many of you may think we should be getting our heads examined for expanding our canine pack to 3, we just couldn't resist this adorable little fella!  He was fostered by the same wonderful woman who fostered Buster before we adopted him 3 years ago, and Beamer has made an unbelievably smooth transition, considering we just got him yesterday.

While the original vet said that Beamer is 4, we don't believe that for a second - he acts and looks much younger, and we're hoping our vet will be able to shed some light on this when I take Beamer in on Monday.  His story was that he was roaming the streets of Newark and was brought to the Newark Humane Society, from where the rescue society plucked him and then he was fostered by Paige for about a month.

He has made himself quite at home here, very comfortable with the surroundings and not a bit intimidated by his much bigger brothers; in fact, he's the ringleader who tries to get them both to play with him!  He's extremely independent, will go in a room and stay there by himself, and he is very loving and affectionate.

So...call us crazy, but as they say...sticks and stones... ;-)  Will send some photos of him with the other boys shortly.

Love,
Margot

Claudius Adapts to Farm Life!

Hi!

Thought you might enjoy an update on Ralph.  For a few weeks we tried calling him Ralph, but it just did not stick.  He seems to prefer Claudius which is now his new name.  He comes running as fast as possible when we call him.  Claudius loves the water in the pond even though he really does not swim or fetch.  He loves playing tug of war with us and wrestling with Nate.  When we are outside, he is happiest when he can be near us.  He likes to climb on our wood pile and up the stairs to the deck where he can watch what we are doing.  Claudius has been a good "physical therapist" for our older dogs. They may not always appreciate his attentions, but he has proven to be fairly gently for a young dog and they are more able to climb the stairs and get up and down because of him.   We made the decision to put Toby, the black Lab, to sleep on Friday.  He had stopped eating and was having breathing problems.  Claudius was usually with Toby and would lick his face.  Toby was the top dog and could take a chew stick from Claudius.  We all miss him.

Claudius' issues are the chickens and car riding.  He killed one of the chickens when we forgot that they were out of their coop and we did not watch Claudius. He is never bad with them when we are out with him.  The chickens must stay in their coop, now.   Also he throws up in the car whenever he comes with us.  Perhaps we can find some doggie car sickness medication.  We are now starting a serious search for a playmate for Claudius.

Yours,

Pat

Eddie, the Frisbee Dog!

Hi Vicki!

We have had Eddie for 2 weeks now, and I'm happy to report that he is doing great and we have all fallen in love with him.  He is such a great dog!  He is sweet, very smart, well-mannered, and has a great temperament.  He loves going on walks with us, and has gotten to know some of the neighborhood dogs, too.  The deer in our neighborhood (we have a lot!) got him pretty excited on his first few walks, but he has settled down and now hardly gives them a second look.  Quite an accomplishment for an old city dog!  Eddie really looks forward to his morning walk, and when we come home after work, he is always SO happy to see us.  He loves going outside, and walks SO nicely with us.  He is learning to heel very well, doesn't come out of the house until we tell him, and even waits calmly and patiently for his food when it is feeding time.  He still loves to cuddle and is the biggest mush!  His all-time favorite toy is his frisbee - he tears around our yard chasing after it, and when he catches it, runs around the yard with it very proudly.  Eddie has quickly become a great member of our family, and we can hardly imagine not having him around.  I'm including some pictures of Eddie with us and one of him with his boy ;) as well as some running shots from a frisbee game.  He is quite a handsome boy, and very photogenic!  Thank you again for rescuing Eddie - we are very very happy to have him in our lives, and so grateful for the work you and Shelter Survivors do.

All the best,

Jacqueline
