Sammy Loves His Snuggle Time!

Hi!

I’ve been often thinking of writing back to let you know how Sammy is doing but have waited until I have pictures, which I don’t have yet.  Just today I had decided to write to you anyway. (I’m not a big snapshot person, so I am always waiting for the perfect occasion- most of the time picture taking  times occur in my house- welcoming Dick and Janna, tussling with David, snuggling with me).  Everything is going well. He enjoys his walks with me everyday and parks walks with me and Janna or me and Dick. He loves to retrieve his “bone”(although he doesn’t want to give it back, but we have worked out a system), which he also tries to sneak into the house (too gooey).  The donut is still one of his two favorite toys and the hedgehog is the other. He is really a people dog and snuggly which I totally love.

Thanks for letting us keep him!

Morgan and Her Pal!

Hi Annette...

I just thought I'd send you some updated pictures of Morgan.  She is now 8 months old and the little piggy weighs 45 lbs.  She weighed 17 lbs when I first got her.  She was spayed a couple weeks ago and is doing great.  Two of her favorite foods are raw carrots and apples.  Everytime I open the fridge she has her nose in there wanting a snack!  I sent you a picture of her laying down as she eats.  This is how she always eats.  I've never known a dog to lay down when they eat!  She's a precious little girl and I'm lucky to have her.  Enjoy the pictures ...

Louie and Mel are Best Buds!

Hey Sonal,

How are you? Just checking in about Louie, he is doing good and loving it here!

Him and Mel are the best of buds, and I guess after Louie realized he was here to stay he warmed up to me and things are great! He definitely likes women more than men but he is very comfortable with me now.

Everyone who has met him has fallen in love with him, and he gets along so well with my little nephew. I even introduced him to some smaller dogs, and it is so nice to see him play more gently with them then he does with bigger dogs. You can be sure I will give Louie a great big hug from your family!

Thank you so much,

Karl, Mel and Louie

BellaTeena Proves How Great Shelter Dogs Can Be!

Hi Ruth!

How are you?  I wanted to send you some new pictures of BellaTeena :0)  I can't believe two months have past already!  At the same time, I can't imagine not having BellaTeena here!  She is such a wonderful dog.  BellaTeena is a super loving dog.  She can't give enough kisses to me when I come home.  She enjoys our walks more and more; and she loves to sit on the balcony (as long as I'm out there) to see what's going on.  She is still shy around other people.  There are lots of people in my neighborhood with dogs, so we go out an socialize as much as we can.  As you will see, her favorite thing to do is lay around on my bed and the couch.  She likes to play with her Kong toy as well!  I continue to let people know how wonderful a shelter dog can be!  Thank you again for helping to save her!

Charlie is Loving Life (And His Toys Of Course!)

Hello Ann!

Just wanted to give you an update on Charlie.  He's settled in very nicely with us.  He's gained weight (all muscle from his daily 30 minute walks and playing tug of war with him).  He weighed almost 52 lbs. when I took him to the vet last month, so he's probably about 54 lbs. now.  He's doing well with his PetSmart obedience training class; will do anything for food!  We make sure he goes outside every 2 hours to prevent any accidents.  We now have a fenced-in yard (5 foot high fence) and that has made life a lot easier!  We can let him out to run around.  We still go out with him; he doesn't like to be outside alone.  Our neighbor adopted a yellow Lab recently, so we're going to get the dogs together for a playdate in our yard.  Charlie still likes to chase squirrels, but now I use a "Gentle Leader" collar on him (it looks like a horse's harness) and I also give him a treat to distract him from the squirrel.  Both methods are working pretty well.  He is definitely a "morning dog."  He's very energetic and frisky in the morning.  In the evening he's mellow and sleepy.  I use a "Furminator" brush on him and it's great!  It brushes out the undercoat and cuts down on the shedding tremendously!  Brett hugs Charlie every chance he gets and Charlie's a good sport about it.  He doesn't mind Brett hugging and squeezing him.  Charlie's so easy going that he usually doesn't mind it when Brett hugs him while he's eating his food or chewing on a bone, although he did lightly nip Brett once when Brett tried to hug him while he was chewing on a bone.  I have to remind Brett to leave him alone and that not all dogs are as easy going as Charlie; some dogs will bite or nip.  One funny thing that Charlie likes to do is "play soccer" with a tennis ball.  He'll have a rubber squeaky toy in his mouth while pushing a tennis ball around with his feet.  I guess he got the idea from watching the boys' soccer games!  He still loves to play with his red rubber Kong toy.  He loves to chew a sterilized bone stuffed with peanut butter or cream cheese; will chew on it for a long time.  I usually give that to him when he's in his crate.

Hope all is well with you.  Are you a foster mother again?

Best regards,

 Bonnie Jean

Emma Charms Everyone (Even Woody!)

Hi Paige,

Emma is doing fine.  She can jump as high as my chin.  Dave and I keep saying how much we love her.  We can see how she's gotten very attached to us.  Even Woody (our chubby bichon) is starting to move more.  Emma keeps him going, which is so good.  She runs around our backyard like she's a greyhound!

We love her so much and can't even remember when she wasn't part of our family.  Pictures to come soon.

love the Hummels xoxoxo

Annie Is a Joy to Have Around!!

Jan,

I just want to thank you for giving Annie to us. As you can see from the picture, she and our son have bonded. Annie enjoys sniffing every blade of grass in the yard, and meeting the neighbors on her walks. She is a joy to have around.

Lots of Admirers For Holly

Hello Karen,

I'm sure you remember Holly, the little dog you fostered after the Holidays. I just want to let you know that she is doing very well, weighs 13 lbs. and seems to have adjusted quite well. She no longer has the separation anxiety that she had at the beginning. I took her for her first grooming and hair cut, she has a beautiful coat but it was a little too warm for summer. She's turned into a handsome little dog and she gets compliments when we are out walking (again last night). She is also very well behaved. Hope your dog is doing well.  I am sold on rescue dogs.

Stretch Is Living It Up In Bloomsbury!

Dear Denise, Paige & all the volunteers at Shelter Survivors,

It's me, Stretch Basset, just dropping you an e-mail to let you know how I'm doing.  I'm living here in Bloomsbury, New Jersey.  The guys from Manhattan used to call Staten Island the "boonies", but believe me, they ain't seen nothing 'til they seen Bloomsbury!  The house my new mom and dad live in is set on eight acres of land.  It's like a city block!  There's plenty of trees, green grass, birds, bunnies and all kinds of neat stuff.  I hear cows moo-ing down the road, goats bleating and chickens clucking from across the road.  There's even llamas and sheep who live around the corner!  The sounds (and smells) are quite different.  Very few cars drive past.

One day I heard this strange noise, and there was this big funny thing going up and down in the field behind my new home.  Mom must have known I was confused because she told me it was Sammy the farmer on his John Deere tractor and that he was planting corn which over the summer would grow tall and lush green.  In the fall it would be harvested to provide food for the farmer's cows.  Corn, I thought, came in a can that said "Green Giant" or in a frozen box that said "Bird's Eye".
Mom and Dad have these two little people who come by a couple times a week.  One is named Hannah and one is named Joseph.  She's four, and he's three.  They are called "grandchildren", and they pet me, give me hugs and kisses.  I'm very gentle with them because I think they could be knocked over and hurt pretty easily.
I've got this really neat bed that I sleep on.  It's a masculine red and black plaid with a soft, cushy top.  It's in Mom and Dad's room, and in the morning when I see Dad's eyes are open, I hop up in bed with them.  It begins my day of head pats, belly rubs, hugs and spoiling.  I'm well fed and, quite frankly, you have to look for my ribs.
In the beginning I was a little worried that I would be leaving here and had some separation anxiety.  I chewed up some tissues and a boring paperback book.  But Mom and Dad understood and reassured me that this was my "forever home".  I don't do those things anymore because I know that when they go out, they will be back shortly.  They went away for a couple days last week, and their son Michael stayed with me.  He said we were "bach-ing" it.  I guess that is some kind of single male bonding thing.  It was fun.
Thank you Denise for saving my life!  I'm very happy.  Please let everyone know that my story has a happy ending.  I'll keep in touch and let you know how I'm doing.  I start "Doggie School" in two weeks.  Maybe I'll be valedictorian of my class.  Won't you be so proud of me?  I know mom and dad will!

With tail wags and doggie kisses - Stretch

Posey is a Brave Girl at the Vet!

Hi Annette,

No worries.  The vet visit went fine.  He said it was probably just the grass giving her doggy pimples and irritating her skin.  It seems to be much less flaky now, so that's good.  She did really well at the vet!  She had 3 shots - DHLPPC, lyme disease, and rabies and she didn't cry or paw or bark at all!  She has been a total dream so far.  Posey loves to chew on her toy and we got her a puppy nylabone also.  But her favorite thing is to chew on empty water bottles :).  She hasn't had any accidents in the house at ALL!!!  She loves her crate (she's actually sleeping in it now with the door open) and she hardly cries and never barks.  She's actually only barked twice since we've had her, and each time it was just once.  She's been good on most car rides but the ride to the vet today was long and she threw up five times :(.  She was fine on the way back though.  She has also had a fantastic time in all the fields here.  There is so much space - it's great for any dog!

Here's a link to some of the pictures we've taken so far: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2161625&l=9dc20&id=615972

I'm always happy to send more updates!  Feel free to use any of the photos for your "success stories" page on the website.  If you have any questions, let me know.

WE LOVE HER!!!

Mario and Maia - Two Peas in a Pod!

Denise:

Mario is getting along fine.  Everyone loves him.  Maia and Mario spent most of the day playing.  In fact that is what is happening now.  You can see from the picture that Maia is a lot bigger/heavier that Mario.   Hopefully all this playing will decrease her size.

Mario has an appointment with my vet on Monday AM for a baseline checkup.  I am sure that cats will enjoy the Mario free zone while he is with Dr. Witiak.  Just kidding the older male is fine with him, the female oblivious.

I will check in with you later on.  Again thank you for the great dog.  He is loved.

Blizzard Enjoys a Day at the Beach!

Blizzard's family sent us some updated photos of him!  Just look at him frolicking on the beach with his new family and enjoying the sun, sand and surf!  It's hard to believe just a couple of months ago this boy was found walking the streets of Manhattan and his future looked bleak.  Now his future is bright and sunny!

Sandy Proves Shelter Dogs Are Amazing!

Hi Sonal,

Things seem to be going very well with Sandy. She is starting to settle into a routine with us. Ben has been up every morning with me a 6:30 am with walks which has been great for him, and Jared has been the evening walker with me, and he is doing well with her. Sandy has already been to a couple of baseball games (little kids loved her), and she has taken many rides with me, and she does fine. She loves playing in the backyard! We went down to Jim's, and Sandy got to meet her dog neighbor, Lucy, a golden retriever, and they had a lot of fun playing. The dogs next door barked for a few days, but now they seem to have calmed down. She is still only eating about 1 1/2 cups of food a day-I am keeping food in her dish all day to encourage her to eat. She seems as though see will eat late at night-when I go to bed around 10:30pm I check her dish and there is food, and most mornings the dish is empty.

I also gave her a bath., and she was great-she just stood there with no complaints. She has been a great dog. She even came to work with me one day....my boss loves dogs. I work at a church, and we have an enclosed court yard that she ran around in, and then just stayed in my office relaxing. We have been working on commands like Stay, Down, Come, and she is responding very well. I am using a 50ft light rope in the back yard to see about training her on the "off lead"-the squirrels are still a little distracting for her, but she responds when I get her attention. When I say "in the house" she will go right to the back door and wait to go in.

She is a great dog, and we thank you so much! Honestly, when we first were thinking about getting a dog I was hesitant to get a dog from a shelter because I thought those were the ones with all the problems, and I didn't want to subject my boys to a bad experience with a dog. But you and Shelter Survivors have really changed my view....If we ever look for a second dog, Shelter Survivors will be the first place I look. Sandy is a blessing to us.

Feeling Lucky With Maggie!

Hi Annette,
How are you?  We decided to name her Maggie - it took us a week but we finally all agreed on a name. (I still think Jay is upset we didn't stick with Shelby).

Maggie is doing great - she has certainly come out of her shell and runs
around like crazy with the other dogs in the house.  We're going to start
training on the invisible fence this weekend so she will be running around
like crazy outside also!

She LOVES her rawhides and will sit for hours chewing.  She sleeps in bed
with Ashley every night and doesn't move or make a peep except for  her
occasional snoring.

People say she's lucky to have found a home and will be very happy with us -
but I think we're the lucky ones.  I can't believe she's ours!

Thanks so much for letting us have her.

Leslie

Ava is the Best Dog in the World!

Hi Sonal,

Ava is doing extremely well!  She is still adjusting to different sounds (doors, dishwasher, etc.)  After you and Marc, left I'm sorry to say she didn't look for you or cry. We sat on the couch together and cuddled until she fell asleep. Then John came home!! I realize now it was a mistake to not have John here when Ava arrived.  She was very upset and frightened when he came home. So he spent all day Saturday making friends with her and now they're best friends!! Today was the first day she was left alone for about 4 hours-we left her loose in the house (I haven't even set up the crate) and she did fine. John was the first home and he said she was so happy to see him when he came in. She has discovered if she stands on Janet's bed she can see out the window so I saw her at the window when I was driving away this morning. It was very sad-it broke my heart to leave her!

Ava is the best dog ever! She is so well behaved and calm, and it is such a pleasure to share our lives and home with her. I took her for a ride in the car on Sunday and she loved it. We went for several walks in the neighborhood with her prong collar and she is very well behaved even when we pass a house that has another dog in the yard. My son and daughter in law came over on Sunday (without Strahan) to meet her and bring her a present, a "fuzzy kong", which she loves. We had a roasted chicken for dinner last night and I left the carcass on the kitchen island while we ate in the dining room, and she never bothered with it-she just laid down on the floor while we ate! Amazing! She has really bonded with Janet, and Ava follows her everywhere! I only get her when Janet goes out. John says she is his dream dog, and that she is such a mush! We love her!

Thank you so much to you and all the Shelter Survivors volunteers.

Shelter Survivors Helps Dixie Find A Home!

Paige,
Thank you for your help in finding Dixie a good home. A couple that you sent to me (Bob and Carol) took her last Friday. Bob called me yesterday and told me how much they love her already. She is adjusting very well. It will still take a little more time for her to completely come around but it looks really great. They are such nice people and everyone, incuding Dixie, is pleased.  You and your shelter are doing a wonderful job.

Thank you soooo much.

Sadie Becomes A Georgia Peach!

Hi Sonal,

Everything is going great with Sadie! She and Lonnie play more and more, although Lonnie wasn't quite sure what to make of Sadie at first when she barks and "growls."  She has become very comfortable with us and we love her. Sadie seems very comfortable throughout the house, but definitely prefers to be where either Milt or I are (preferably Milt). She follows Milt around like he is the Pied Piper. She stays downstairs with me until I go to bed, then settles in next to the bed on her blanket.

Just wanted to let you know we sold our house and will be moving March 31st.  If you want to visit Sadie, you'll have to come before then or visit us in Georgia (I think you might like that idea). Sadie is doing fine and is very comfortable with our family. We just love her and can't believe anyone would have given her up. I feel bad that she will be moving again so soon, but Milt says as long as she's with us, she'll be fine. "She's now part of our pack." Milt thinks she's an absolutely beautiful dog. Thanks again for giving us such a wonderful dog! She is such a pleasure to have in our lives.
