Who We Are
Shelter Survivors is a 501 (C)(3) rescue group. We rescue dogs that have been turned over to high kill shelters in the tri-state area. Many of these dogs have wonderful temperaments, yet they face the risk of euthanasia simply due to overcrowding in our local shelters. Shelter Survivors’ dogs live in foster homes until they find their permanent homes. They are integrated into our homes so that we can have a better understanding of who they are, which gives us the opportunity to match families up with our dogs so a home really is forever!
Featured Dog Of The Month
Max is an adorable rat terrier mix who was surrendered to the shelter when his owner died. The poor little guy was heartbroken to be in a cage away from his beloved owner, and when the shelter sent us his picture we drove immediately to get him.
It is obvious that Max was very well cared for. He has wonderful manners, is completely housebroken, and he absolutely loves to cuddle. He follows his foster mom everywhere, and enjoys being picked up and held. At bedtime he digs under the covers by her feet and curls himself into a little ball for a long nights sleep.
Max loves to play with the other dogs in his foster home. Being the little dude that he is, he does feel the need to be a bit dominant, but that doesn't stop him from being friendly with other canines. He loves to play tug-of-war and fetch balls that are way too big for his mouth (he somehow manages to pick them up though).
Max is about 8 years old, which is "young" for a small breed dog. He is up to date on all his shots, neutered, heartworm negative, microchipped, and housebroken. His foster family leaves him free in the house with the other dogs while they are at work during the day and he is perfectly behaved. You couldn't ask for more!

A poem to my foster dog
I am the bridge Between what was and what can be.
I am the pathway to a new life.
I am made of mush,
Because my heart melted when I saw you,
Matted and sore, limping, depressed,
Lonely, unwanted, afraid to love.
For one little time you are mine.
I will feed you with my own hand, I will love you with my whole heart
I will make you whole.
I am made of steel.
Because when the time comes,
When you are well, and sleek,
When your eyes shine,
And your tail wags with joy
Then comes the hard part. I will let you go--not without a tear, But without a regret. For you are safe forever--
A new dog needs me now.
