Who We Are

Shelter Survivors is a 501 (C)(3) rescue group. We rescue dogs that have been turned over to high kill shelters in the tri-state area. Many of these dogs have wonderful temperaments, yet they face the risk of euthanasia simply due to overcrowding in our local shelters. Shelter Survivors’ dogs live in foster homes until they find their permanent homes. They are integrated into our homes so that we can have a better understanding of who they are, which gives us the opportunity to match families up with our dogs so a home really is forever!
Featured Dog Of The Month!
(Hospice Care For Meimei)
This is our pretty girl Meimei.... Meimei was surrendered to the shelter when her owners were moving and they couldn't take care of her skin disease. We saw this sweet girl and we knew we needed to help her. Meimei was quickly adopted out, but was returned when it was realized that Meimei's kidneys were not functioning properly. After taking Meimei to the vet for extensive testing, we were very sad to find out that Meimei is in Stage 3/4 kidney disease. This was not the prognosis that we were hoping for. Meimei will now go from being a special needs case to a hospice case. Meimei's foster family has committed to keeping her comfortable for as long as possible; Meimei will remain in their care until her journey has ended. We will continue to manage Meimei's disease with prescription food, supplements, and medication. Most of all, we will spoil Meimei with endless love, cuddles, and comfort. She's a special little girl and we are heartbroken over her diagnosis. Right now, Meimei is in good spirits. She's happy and not in any pain. If you are interested in donating towards Meimei's care, you can do that by going to www.sheltersurvivors.com and clicking on the "Donate" button; or by going to the “How To Help” page to send a donation by mail. Thank you so much for your continued support.

A poem to my foster dog
I am the bridge Between what was and what can be.
I am the pathway to a new life.
I am made of mush,
Because my heart melted when I saw you,
Matted and sore, limping, depressed,
Lonely, unwanted, afraid to love.
For one little time you are mine.
I will feed you with my own hand,
I will love you with my whole heart
I will make you whole.
I am made of steel.
Because when the time comes,
When you are well, and sleek,
When your eyes shine,
And your tail wags with joy
Then comes the hard part.
I will let you go--not without a tear,
But without a regret.
For you are safe forever--
A new dog needs me now.
